Saint John, NB Canada 6/7/10- Canadian Maritime super late model competitor Lonnie Sommerville of Saint John, New Brunswick and his Lonnie Sommerville Racing team are proud to announce their 2010 racing schedule. After already having competed in two races on the PASS National tour and picking up his first win south of the border during New Smyrna Speedway’s Speedweeks in Florida this past January, Sommerville and long time sponsor A.E. McKay Builders will shift their focus on major events only for the 2010 season making it the first time in four seasons that the team will not compete for the Carquest Maritime Pro Stock Tour championship.
As of now, Sommerville is scheduled to make four stops on the Maritime tour schedule, three of them being the three 250 lap triple crown events at Riverside Int’l Speedway (July 17th), Scotia Speedworld (August 7th), and Speedway 660 (September 5th) in addition to a 100 lap show at his home track of Speedway 660 on July 24th. One championship that the team will chase will be the 2010 PASS National championship were Sommerville currently sits fifth in points after two races. Several other PASS North series races are scheduled, beginning with the PASS 200 at Speedway 660 in Geary, NB on June 12th as Sommerville will look to defend his home turf against the series regulars.
Sommerville will end the season in the same state he started it in by closing out his 2010 season racing in his first ever Snowball Derby at Five Flags Speedway in Pensacola, Florida on December 6th. In its 43rd year of existence, the Snowball Derby has become the crown jewel of short track racing, so for Sommerville to have a shot at competing in the most prestigious race with the stiffest competition assembled for a single race is something he will be looking forward to all year long.
In addition to his driving duties, Lonnie will serve as crew
chief throughout the season for Speedway 660 pro stock regular Matt Harris and
his familiar #87 machine as he hopes to improve on the team’s breakout year
from a season ago by possibly capturing the team’s first ever championship.
Lonnie Sommerville Racing will also continue to serve the Maritime with its
full service maintenance, parts, consulting and complete fabrication services
year around out of its
“I’m excited about our schedule this year and really just getting back behind the wheel of my A.E. McKay Builders Chevy Impala this weekend. We’ve got a great team with a few races already under our belt so we’ve got a lot to look forward to,” stated Sommerville. “This year we aren’t points racing so every time we show up to the track we are looking to leave the track with a win because there’s no reason to have a good points finish anymore. I know the races we have planned are going to have some tough competition, but the goal of winning races will be the same regardless of who we race against.”
